CES 2009: AMD Promises Crysis on A Cellphone
My computer can barely play Crysis. How the hell is a phone going to play Crysis? Now I am starting to think that everyone at AMD is completely insane.
Well, they say you will be able to play PC games on your cellphone but your cellphone will not have to render it. AMD’s idea is much bigger. They are building one of the most powerful supercomputers ever with one purpose in mind. Rendering HD and creating the ultimate graphics based cloud computer.
Here is how this will work:
- AMD will build this super computer with over 1,000 graphics processors. It will break the one petaFLOP barrier
- The computer will render 3D games, applications, and HD content.
- The content will be compressed and then streamed to your smartphone, laptop, or hand-held device that would otherwise melt from rendering those graphics.
I say that it is ingenious. How is AMD at building supercomputers?
“AMD has a long track record in the supercomputing world. Seven out of 10 of the world’s fastest machines, including the fastest two computers on the planet, are powered by AMD hardware.”-AMD spokesperson at CES 2009
It seems that the techknology won’t be limited to phones. The content will stream over any broadband connection, so in theory, anyone with a broadband connection should be able to utilize the benefits of cloud based HD computing.
