The Art of Community – Jono Bacon – Ubuntu Live Stream
I got stuck at home this afternoon by a series of events that are mostly unimportant. What I ended up doing while waiting to leave, is much more interesting. I had noticed a Facebook status update from the Ubuntu Community, and it grabbed my attention with it’s words: Jono Bacon: Live Ubuntu Video Q+A: Every Wednesday
I went ahead and clicked the link thinking, “I have time, why not?“
What I witnessed was an hour long explanation of where Ubuntu is headed with the new release “Natty.” Jono was quite informative with everything and he spent the last twenty minutes answering community questions. Nothing technical, save those for the forums.
All in all, the whole hour was quite energetic and fulfilling for a first time participant. I say participant because not only did I attend this event, I also had the ability to contribute along with the hundred or so people who were attached to the ustream live cast.
Introducing himself to the crowd, he went as far as mentioning some of the newcomers who were courageous enough to admit it was their first time at the Q+A. Briefly describing what he does for Ubuntu and Canonical Ltd, and mentioning his book about community, which just furthered his credentials as being the right man for the position he holds. (Community Manager for Ubuntu) He went on to mention this huge event happening the first through the third of April.
It’s called the “Ubuntu Global Jam” and I will be looking into events planned for the greater NYC area. If I am unable to find one, I may have to run my own. Mostly focused on Natty and the Unity desktop, he mentioned a few other software changes, like Banshee being the new default music player instead of Rhythmbox. I had used Unity on my Netbook with Ubuntu 10.10. (Thanks to RedSeven of Scottsdale AZ, I won it as part of a raffle.) I quickly started using the gnome desktop after having issues with the Unity desktop. I’m looking forward to giving it another test run after I upgrade my Netbook to Natty.
Jono ended his Q+A with a little music from his guitar. ”very metal” was the only thought that crossed my mind and he jammed into a rendition of the Imperial March.
He then mentioned his band “Severed Fifth” and encouraged us to join him in the ustream event about the band. Being an avid fan of metal, I eagerly followed. I also connected to their IRC channel.
Drop by say hello, tell them DeusQain From RazeTheWorld sent you.

I got a hold of Jono’s book, it’s under the creative commons license, which means it is free to download and read. Also it is available through many retail outlets. (if you desire a hard copy)
