Nvidia SLI on AMD Bulldozer FX Platforms
This is probably an April Fools joke but xbitlabs.com is claiming to have some leaked information. They report that Nvidia is licensing SLI for use on the AMD chipsets, in particular the 990FX and the 990X.
They also say, “For the first time in history, Nvidia Corp. plans to enable operation of its multi-GPU SLI technology on AMD platforms.” We all know that is ridiculous and inaccurate. There used to be Nforce motherboards with sockets for AMD CPU’s. I think it sounds like a joke but it was posted on 3/31, not 4/1. Here is a link to the article:

So, do you think it is a joke?

i would actualyl like to see this (even tho im a intel fan) amd user should ahve the abiility to have better QUALITY graphics in sli if they want

Don’t start with the Nvidia is better than AMD stuff. They are both pretty equal these days… Nvidia does have CUDA though.

and PHYSX

I did some research, it’s definitely not a april fools thing. it is more than likely the real deal

I think it’s true because it makes buisness sense for both Nvidia and amd. I think not being able to SLI on AMD motherboards is a huge disadvantage (esp. for those who are aware of this issue). Lots of people don’t even know this limitation on amd motherboards if they didnt do their research, such as my brother. (I’m talking the more casual computer pple).
A recent experience that I had with my brother is that he had a GTX 460 in his system. One day he wanted to do SLI. He was using an amd 890GX motherboard. He went ahead and bought the gtx 460. He then found out he did not have an SLI bridge, so he went ahead and bought one. He tried to enable SLI after connecting the bridge but couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t work.
So because a single GTX 460 worked on his motherboard, he thought to himself, “Why wouldn’t 2 work in SLI”. An experience like that kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
So i think its great for everyone, except maybe AMD graphic cards since people using the new amd motherboards and want to think about future expandability, arent forced to think that if they buy an amd motherboard and want more than 1 card in their system they arent stuck with strictly amd cards. But thats not nearly as bad as not being able to sli, which will make up for the fact that amd users will be able to chose between nvidia and amd cards more freely.
I think not being ablt to SLI hurts buisness more than consumers now having a free choice of nvidia or amd on a new amd motherboard.

april fools much
03 Apr 2011, 1:33 pm
It does make sense to do it so I don’t see why not..
all it means is that theres more of a chance for nvidia to take money off of AMD even
03 Apr 2011, 6:18 pm
AMD has been taking money from Nvidia for awhile now !!
03 Apr 2011, 2:01 pm
It was always Nvidia that was stopping SLI on AMD boards. Im just glad they finally got off their high horse and realised that they can earn more money this way.
03 Apr 2011, 2:12 pm
ok, im not trying to fuel the fire here, but ati does have openCL support (its basically like cuda)… although, i would like to see comparisons of openCL to CUDA on gaming cards…
back on topic..
,this would be awesome, because the bulldozer has shared integer ALU processing cores, which will make it beast for number crunching….. this, added with with a tesla, or any other workstation card… will give you a personal super computer.
03 Apr 2011, 2:48 pm
I’ll go AMD next time. GO FUCKING NVIDIA + AMD!!!
03 Apr 2011, 3:45 pm
This sounds a little too good to be true. I don’t see why AMD would agree to something like that, since they’re directly competing against Nvidia. While their motherboards and cpus might sell a little better with this deal, I would imagine that their sales in video cards would fall by a decent amount. But then again, AMD’s cards do tend to be cheaper.
04 Apr 2011, 2:48 am
Lol, usually because AMD offers more bang for the buck.
04 Apr 2011, 5:41 am
Oh really.
GTX 5xx vs 58/59xx series seems more like an nvidia win (except for the dualgpus) to me. Especially the 560 (or 460 for that sake)
04 Apr 2011, 7:15 am
to be honest, if fluctuates… and it also depends on your budget.. im not sure if i want to call the 6xxx a clear win… but ati (well…amd) has rly levelled the playing field. im not disputing there is a performance gap… but it sure has lessened in the past few years.
04 Apr 2011, 8:06 am
What AMD seems to be doing, is to actualy have higher prices on their products, because the performance gap isnt that big between the two anymore, so amd sees the oppurtunity to actually move away from bang for the buck we all know them for.. A good example is 6990, same price as 590 (very close)
04 Apr 2011, 1:55 pm
Considering I have an AMD system now and using the sli hack for my 460′s, I have no doubt this is possible. Even if this was a joke, I’d still get it for what it’s capable of doing thanks to very smart people on the internet.
04 Apr 2011, 2:02 pm
haha didn’t even think that people would do something like that.. might take a bit to come out at first but still nice to see it can be done.
04 Apr 2011, 6:45 pm
Well Nvidia definitely won for this generation of cards, which I kind of saw coming. As for the 6990 vs the 590, though, I’d personally probably rather have the 6990. It tends to perform better in the games that I enjoy playing.

I really don’t know why anyone cares about PhysX.
