Ice Dragon Cooling at CES 2012
Hey everyone, Logan and I managed to get to CES this year, while there we saw an interesting cooling liquid created by Ice Dragon (http://icedragoncooling.com/). Check out the video:
So a bit about Ice Dragon’s cooling liquid: it was created by a couple students at the University of South Carolina in collaboration with the US Airforce for the purpose of cooling on board electronics without replacing the cooling systems the jets came outfitted with. The students were experimenting specifically with nanofluids, and they noticed that when the nanoparticles in the liquid were unusually shaped, the liquid did a better job of cooling. Apparently the shape of the nanoparticle responds to variations in density (heat) of the liquid by spinning or otherwise moving, pushing the hotter liquid to the outsides of the cooling tubes more effectively.

Seems like a cool idea (pun intended). However, I’d like to see some wear results. Does the coolant cause increased wear on CPU/GPU/MOSFET/VRAM blocks? Do the nanoparticles in the coolant become less effective over time and thus cause a degradation in the coolant’s heat transfer properties?

And what about algae? It’s very expensive too.

Aye…$30 for a 32oz. bottle as opposed to $0.50 for a gallon of distilled. So $120 for a gallon of this coolant.

for as expensive as it is, I have the feeling the people who get it are gonna use it for show and bragging rights.
