The Humble Bundle Mojam!

  1. For those of you who haven’t yet heard, Mojang is teaming up with the Humble Bundle to make a video game from scratch in 60 hrs.  As of right typing this, Mojang’s crew is about 6.5 hrs into the game.

The game is, as per a 100,000+ user poll, a real-time strategy shooter with an ancient Egyptian theme.  Also, some steampunk is thrown into the mix.  Should be interesting…Perhaps more interesting than the game, though, is the fact that Mojang is livestreaming the entire process.  That’s right, 60 hrs, you get to see all the drama that goes down during the process of creating a video game!  Actually, you get to see a lot of screen captures of people typing things.  But!  At least I find that particularly fascinating.  Bringing a personal note to this: I’m in a video game development class this semester, but so far we’ve only been making games in a fairly simple game design program that generates actionscript for us…so watching the live stream is cool for me because I actually get to see the developers programming rather than using a bit of software that abstracts away from the code and “sugar-coats” things.

Check out this link to watch the livestream and donate to the Humble Bundle to get this game: http://www.humblebundle.com/?mojam

Remember, the Humble Bundle is a pretty awesome organization and the proceeds go to some worthy causes…so make a nice contribution if you can spare it.

  2. Hey thanks so much for posting this! I'm especially interested in the programming side of things. But I can hardly image they're making a whole new engine just for one game.

  3. Edited for clarity, I didn’t mean to imply he was creating a completely new engine for the game, I was just trying to say that, at least in the bit of livestream I watched, they’re implementing all this stuff with Java code (?) rather than software that abstracts away from the code.

  4. ^Absolutely. I'm sure they're using an existing engine, maybe tweaking it a bit. I've been watching the livestream a bit, I saw Notch import a jave file from Minecraft, he was using an existing bit of code to use in the game they're making.
