pc case shocking me help

(15 posts)
  1. My pc case is shocking me every time I touch it. It restarts the computer. I have had my house tested for ground from the outlet to the main but still no help. Tried a different outlet as well.

Also checked all the motherboard standoffs and wires. Nothing is unusual or out of place. No bare wires touching either.

I even have this pc hooked up to a Panamax power conditioner I got for a present awhile back. Nothing else hooked up is having an issue.

System will work fine as long as you don't touch it.

Also I have a 4-bay enclosure attached by usb and it will shock me but not restart the computer.

Is this a sign of a bad PSU?

Any help to try and diagnose the cause would be appreciated.

ps. I should state that I built this myself two years back and the problem just started recently.

  2. Well you must have a short somewhere (metal contact touching your case). You probably have a grounding problem, either your outlet's ground wire is broken, or something is wrong with your PSU. Try it in a different outlet (if you haven't already), otherwise don't even switch the PC on, it could be kind of dangerous. Where do you live?

  4. Looks like it was the power supply. I replaced it with a corsair (what I could get on short notice) and so far so good. I will let you know how it goes after a couple of days. Thanks everyone for trying to help me.

  5. Well it seems I didn't solve my problem with a new psu because it has started to happen again.

    Could it be my motherboard?
Could it be dry air causing static shock?

I took the whole pc apart when I installed the new psu and was very careful to check all contacts and wires. The new psu seemed to solve the issue for awhile so I am completely baffled.

PC doesn't seem to have any other problems. Maybe I should just build a an acrylic case.lol

    So frustrating.

  6. Take everything out of the case and let it run that way.

Get some plastic/rubber washers for your standoffs and see if that does anything.

  7. @Rabu- you said take everything out run it. So I should use the power switch and see if the case shocks with nothing but the power switch connected while running it outside the case?

I will go up and get some rubber washers later today. Thanks for trying to help me.

  8. If your motherboard has an on-board power button just take that shit out and run it in a box or something, if not just keep the case nearby and use the button, yeah.

Also, if you're using a power-strip try a direct wall connection, sometimes power-strips will do some fucked up stuff if they're getting old or too much power is being drawn from it.

  9. I will try the out of box run with all peripherals disconnected this afternoon. Motherboard doesn't have power button. I am going to go get some washers now although the standoff screws are not very long but I will see what I can get.

I have tried every kind of power option conceivable. Like I said before, I have even changed the outlets themselves and had my circuit test to the main as well as the main house grounding. This problem is definitely isolated to the pc or a connected peripheral. We will see what the out-of-box run results are soon enough.

Thanks again. Will report back later with the results.

  13. Well I finally had a chance to get the rubber washers and sat down right now to take apart the computer but I can't get the computer case to shock me now. I am getting confused at what is going on.

Could this really be an issue of the environment? The air in my room or something else? I am getting really confused now.

Should I even both putting the washers on? I am guessing I need to put them between the motherboard and the standoffs? Is that correct?

    Thanks everyone for your help

  14. Yeah, stick them between the motherboard and standoffs.

I'm pretty sure it's a short with an improperly grounded case.
