home networking help?

  1. I have a cable modem/wireless router(router A) all in one and want to connect a netgear wndr4500 wireless router (router B) to router A wirelessly so I can use the lan ports on router B in another room without running an ethernet cable.

    Is this possible?

I was reading the Netgear manual but if what I am reading is correct it says I have to use WEP or none for security. Does this mean on both or does router A security take over? I am confused on the terms repeater, bridge, switcher, access point, etc. Also the Netgear manual is a little confusing on if I turn off DHCP or other stuff besides changing the ip subnet and clicking a few buttons. Doesn't seem right.

I have read as much as I could find on the subject but still pretty confused.

If anyone can help me or at least verify that what I want is the repeater function on router B I would be most grateful. Although I hope I am not limited to WEP as I am reading because that seems ridiculous.

Here is a link to the manual of the netgear

  2. I'm pretty sure this is impossible. What you need is something like a booster/range extender.

  3. It is entirely possible, I have run repeater setups on both, wireless g and n routers. One thing you have to note is that it will halve your wireless speed. So it you have a 54mbps router the speed will be limited to 22mbps and will be halved again for every router you add. If you use the custom DD-WRT firmware on a supported device which you can check here http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database upon entering the router model name.

  4. thanks but I do not see my netgear listed on that website?

What you are saying is I should hard line the set up to get full use?

  5. if you want reasonable transfer speeds I would go connect the two routers with a cable. Using a wireless repeater will be fine for browsing the internet and downloading files, but transferring large files over your LAN will take a long time. There are a lot of tutorials on the dd-wrt website telling you how to set up a repeater setup in the firmware if you buy one of the supported routers.

    here:

Sorry if this sounds a little confusing i'm sure Qain would have alot more to add on this topic.

  6. thanks everyone. I think i get it now.<<<<<< says the network noob before he screws it up.lol

If I hook router A to router B wired (lan to lan) and want different ssid's (not seemless roaming) I will be fine just setting up router B as normal as long as the ip's are different but along the same lines. example 168.192.1.1 and 168.192.1.2 and disable DHCP on router B so only router A does the dynamic part.

Hope this correct because here I go.lol

ps. wish I had half of Qain's knowledge when it comes to this stuff.lol

  7. You have a WNDR4500 netgear is router B, but what is router A?

Also remember when using different SSIDs to also make sure you put them on different channels.

I use WiFi-Analyzer on my Android phone to check the area for least used channels.

  8. dd-wrt on the second router, set it to repeater bridge with an ip address of 192.168.1.2... go to the wireless tab under status and click site survey and join it to your other router.

completely ignored everything above this, so sorry if someone said this already.

  9. Qain--router A is an Arris cable one modem/wireless router. Router B I had wrong. Router B is a netgear 3700. Not sure where I got 4500 from. Sorry. I believe this is router A below but still not sure. Router B is now correct below.

    router A-http://help.cableone.net/HSD/Modem/Wireless/Arris552WirelessModemSetupInstructions.pdf

    router B-ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNDR3700_UM_16OCT2009.pdf

I want to connect router A to router B having both work with separate ssid's. I tried to do it earlier but screwed it up. Had to reset router just to get into router settings again.

Could you write me a step by step on how to do this? Pleaseeeeeee.

Router A IP is 192.168.2.1. It says it goes from 2 to 254 on the dynamic ip. Do I need to do anything on Router A? On router B do I need to assign a static IP or just change the ip which says its 192.168.1.1 unless I hook it to router A then it changes to a 192.168.2.2? Not sure how to do this if so. Everything I read says turn off DHCP on router B? Now you say check channels which I get so I can do that. Sorry for the trouble but I am so confused on this network stuff. Seems like it should be simple but when you start to look at what is all possible it seems daunting. I have factory reset router B so I am going from scratch on that router.

Here is my understanding and maybe you can see where I mess up-----

Do nothing with router A but find out the ip and subnetmask(not sure what to do with subnetmask at all)of router A?

Disconnect router B from internet and everything else except a hard line to computer not hooked up to internet?

Go into router B settings and do the following

change router B ip address to something new but not sure what. I am guessing 192.168.2.x? X being-idk?

router B subnetmask the same as router A?

check channels to be different with android app to see what is around(have android phone so I can do this).

channels need to be different from channels around me for each ssid? somewhere I read they should be apart like 1 and 6? only see channels 1-11 listed in drop down on router B settings

disable DHCP on router B so that only router A handles the Dynamic? Leave router A DHCP alone?

completely lost at this point or have I been lost the whole time?lol

Any help will and is always appreciated and thanks again to all that are trying to help me.

  10. If you have a Netgear 3700 either v1 or v2 (should say on the device, or on the webinterface)

you can get DD-WRT for the router.. THEN you set up your router B (the netgear) as a wireless client, and you can use it as a bridge to your wired connections.. I have done this several times.. works like a dream. (as long as your wireless signal between the two is sound)

  11. okay thanks Qain. I will look into that first thing tomorrow. Thanks again.

  14. Maybe when the little lady finishes the unpacking (just moved to a new city) and finds the camera I will try to find the time to make a step by step video for anyone else in the situation. I probably should be helping unpack the last few days but I wanted my man toys up and running.lol

Not sure pics would be helpful as two routers just sitting there isn't very interesting.lol

Thanks again Qain for pointing me in the right directions.
