AMD Radeon HD 7970 Video Review

(9 posts)
  1. The AMD Radeon HD 7970 is here. I finally got around to messing with one. This is the best single GPU card in the world. It’s also the best card I have ever seen when performance per watt is concerned.

I put this card up against some dual GPU cards as well as the 6970. I know a few of you want to know how fast it is compared to the GTX 580… but I don’t have one, lol.

Next up, I am going to do a little bitcoin mining. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Also, I made a couple of mistakes… I’m too busy boxing things up to move the hell out of Miami… So, no comments about me saying 7990… and I think I screwed up on the PCI-E power connections as well… you need one 6 pin and one 8 pin PCI-E power connector for this. I’ll add a YT annotation cause I don’t feel like re-rendering just for that.

  2. Hoping to get two of these things. But I'm a silent freak, so I'm concerned about the noise. About bitcoin, you're not still into that are you? It became pointless after the price dropped.

  4. I'm concentrating on getting more displays and/or a DSLR as a PC upgrade has slipped down my priority list :(

  5. At $500+ I'm not getting this any time soon. I still have to get my PSU which I'm hoping to be able to buy around March. I also am wondering if the bitcoin is still worth it.

And not to start a whole thread just for this. Can anyone tell me if spending on a 6850 is worth getting to replace two 4870s running cross fire? I want to get DX11 for tessellation and use it on newer games. That's all. I'm thinking the crossfire 4870s might still outperform it but I want my tessellation. I feel left behind.

  7. While the numbers for this card are impressive, I still think that Nvidia is just going to completely blow it out of the water when they come out with their new cards.

The 6850 is a great value, but keep in mind that it's only about as powerful as a GTX 460.

$150 is my budget. I just noticed they lowered one of the 6870's to $150 though. It's either this or waiting more to get more money for a better one. At least once I have my PSU I'll be able to decide if I can wait or not.

  9. although I did some research on the 7970 and it scales very well. The 4 way crossfire scalling is very good too. Now only if I could afford 4 of these well let alone one of them.
